I recently set up an OpenVZ system and loaded a Debian minimal Virtual Machine in a container. I then proceeded to load Sun Web Server and PostgreSQL for hosting web sites. Everything installed without any problems whatsoever just as if I was installing on a Bare metal Debian installation. In my limited performance testing, I could not distinguish a difference between a bare metal installation or the VM. I am sure there must be some, but running a large Java application it was not noticed.
This presents some interesting options. With Sun Web Server, you can have different configurations to achieve isolation. Obviously, with different containers using OpenVZ, you can achieve isolation as well. So basically, you can have several virtual hosts in a configuration, you can have multiple configurations, and multiple containers all on the same hardware. I hope to gain some more experience about where exactly to draw the line on all of these options based on some type of criteria.
After several years, I am still enjoying every bit of Sun Web Server!
